How to Become an AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill Artist
Artist Selection
Artists interested in participating in AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill must submit applications to the artists committee. Sponsors will select artists based on portfolios submitted to the Artists Committee from the selected artists.
Ownership/Proceeds
AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill is a public art project. Chestnut Hill District will retain ownership of the animals until they are sold at auction. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Chestnut Hill District and the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
Display
The animals will be on public display from September 17th through November 18th along Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike. At the AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill auction the animals will be offered for sale to the public.
Artist Fees
Artist fees and cost of supplies will vary, depending on the size of the animal being designed. Payment will be made in two parts…one-half upon selection of the artist by a sponsor and one-half upon delivery by the artist of the finished form by the date specified by the artists’ committee.

There is no guarantee that every artist who applies will be chosen by a sponsor, and the AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill committee reserves the right to reject an artist’s application. Once selected by a sponsor, the artist must submit a design proposal for the animal, which is subject to review by the Artists Committee and sponsor. The Artists Committee reserves the right to reject the artist’s submission and no form will be released to the artist until the design is approved. Minor changes in the design may be made in the course of work, but any major change to the design must be pre-approved. If major changes are made with approval, the stipend might be reduced and the animal not displayed.
Artists are responsible for securing their own workspace unless it is provided by AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill. Artists will work with approved mediums and finishes to assure the longevity of the artwork on the fiberglass surface. All materials must withstand climatic conditions, be safe and durable enough for the public to touch, and be permanent enough to resist removal by eager fingers.
Artists who live outside the immediate Chestnut Hill area will be responsible to pick up the unpainted animal and then deliver it back to Chestnut Hill when finished.
The fiberglass form shall be owned by AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill until the end of the auction. The artist who is hired as the creator of the design will share the copyright of the design with the sponsor and the project in perpetuity, however, the artist and the sponsor cannot use the image of the design for commercial purposes until the event has concluded, such right being reserved by AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill during the project.
AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill shall have the right to reproduce and distribute the design or a derivative of the design for purposes of promoting the event by all means and media, including the right to use the design or design derivative on a variety of merchandise that may as yet to be determined. No additional payment will be made to the artists for these rights. After the event concludes, the artist, the sponsor and the project may use the image for commercial purposes, in perpetuity.
